About the event

For our October event, for the second year we are continuing what we hope will become an annual Hui tradition of hosting noted local historian Jessie Higa for a historical walking tour of Fort Shafter.  Jessie is a longtime vendor for MWR and frequently leads tours related to the events of December 7, 1941.  She has volunteered to give Hui members a special tour - not (yet!) available outside of the Hui - of how Fort Shafter fits in to the narrative of that fateful day and what followed for the spouses and families living here on base.  We are delighted that Jim Proctor will also join us again.  Jim retired from the Army and again from DoD as a civilian.  Not only is he a history buff, but, in December 1991, in his last Active Duty assignment, he hosted the WARD ladies in the Lizard for their 50th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor reunion.

We will begin our tour promptly at 10:00 am at the Gazebo on Palm Circle across from building T-100 (the old USARPAC HQ).  We will learn about the stately homes and buildings on Palm Circle, as well as the old Tripler Hospital, which was located on Fort Shafter in 1941 and did not move to the present location until 1948.  We will then visit Tunnels 1-3 up the hill, codenamed “Lizard” during the war, where the Women’s Air Raid Defense (the “Radar Girls”) operated.  We anticipate finishing our tour at approximately 12:30 pm.

Plan to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring sun protection and water.  Please join the chat on Facebook for questions on the tour and to volunteer to carpool.  Depending on our final headcount, we may need as many as eight volunteers to park at Hale Ikena and take carpools of participants up to the tunnels, where parking is quite limited.  Thank you!
